CO₂ tolerance and the urge to breathe

The urge to breathe during a breath-hold is driven strongly by rising carbon dioxide. Understanding that signal can improve calm—but it must never be used to ignore safety.

What the signal means

As carbon dioxide rises, the body increases the drive to breathe. Diaphragm contractions may appear as the breath-hold continues. They are information, not a stopwatch and not proof that oxygen remains at a safe level.

Tolerance is not oxygen

A person can become more comfortable with CO₂ without gaining equal protection from low oxygen. This distinction matters because a quieter urge to breathe can create false confidence. Progress must be judged by technique, recovery and conservative supervision—not discomfort alone.

Responsible training principles

Safety: Never practise breath-holds while driving, standing in a hazardous place, bathing or swimming alone. In-water breath-hold training requires qualified supervision.
